A UK resident may be affected by terrorism abroad if they were travelling, living overseas, or supporting someone affected by an incident in another country.

This page outlines the support that may be available both while you are abroad and after you return to the UK, and offers guidance on navigating different systems.

Support available to you

Support is available both while you are abroad and after you return to the UK. Different organisations may work together to make sure you get the help you need.

You may be able to access:

  • immediate emotional and psychological support
  • help returning to the UK if needed, including practical guidance
  • support for family members, whether they are with you or in the UK
  • guidance on financial assistance, compensation or insurance
  • help understanding legal or investigative processes in another country.

Support can come from a combination of services, including:

  • UK Government support, including consular services (support from UK embassies for British nationals abroad)
  • local emergency and healthcare services in the country where the incident took place
  • specialist organisations offering trauma, bereavement or practical support.

You can find more information if you’ve experienced terrorism abroad in the following links:

When you return home, you can continue to receive support based on your needs. The Support Hub can help you in different ways.

These may include:

  • emotional and psychological support
  • support for family members
  • guidance on financial assistance, compensation or insurance
  • help understanding legal or investigative processes linked to the incident.

You may receive support from:

  • UK-based services such as Victim Support
  • specialist organisations offering trauma, bereavement or practical support.

Some of the support you received while abroad may continue, or alternative support will be arranged to make sure you are supported in the way that feels right for you.

You can contact us at any time or make a self‑referral through this website. We’ll help you access support in a way that feels right for you.

Understanding the legal process

The Support Hub for Victims and Survivors of Terrorism can support foreign nationals affected by an incident in the UK, as well as UK nationals affected by an incident overseas.

The way support and legal processes work can be very different from country to country. In these situations, responsibility for overseas support may sit with the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and local authorities in that country.

Our caseworkers can provide information to help people understand what these processes may involve. This can include identifying translation needs, and signposting to appropriate organisations, including the FCDO or country specific services.

We do not provide legal advice, legal opinions, or guidance on how the law applies to individual circumstances. We can help you understand what support may be available, explain processes in plain language, and help you navigate next steps where possible.
